Overview
I am a Syrian-registered pharmacist who completed a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree at the Arab International University in Syria in 2013. Following the receipt of the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Avempace 2 Award from the EU Commission, I began my PhD at the Institute Charles Gerhardt (ICGM) / University of Montpellier, France. My doctoral research, conducted within the Advanced Materials for Health and Catalysis research team, focused on developing novel lipid-based nanoformulations and nanocrystals for the transdermal delivery of antioxidants.
In 2016, I joined the University of Rennes 1, School of Pharmacy, as a Research and Teaching Fellow, where I worked on polymeric nanoparticles for delivering inorganic photosensitizing agents for the theranostic management of ovarian cancer. In May 2018, I joined Queen’s University Belfast School of Pharmacy as a Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Sciences. In 2023, I was promoted to Senior Lecturer, and in April 2025, I joined Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» as a Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Technology, where I lead the pharmaceutics development within the MPharm program.
Qualifications
- Professional: HEA fellowship
Advance HE, 2020 - Professional: The Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching (PGCHET
Queen's University, Belfast, 2020 - PhD: PhD in pharmaceutical technology: Comparison of topical quercetin nanoformulations for skin protection
Université de Montpellier, 2016
Teaching and Supervision
I teach pharmaceutical sciences and technology components within the MPharm program. Additionally, I engage in pedagogical research aimed at enhancing student engagement and learning through various blended learning approaches. My role extends to administrative responsibilities, including serving as the advisor of studies and others.
Research Interests
My research focuses on developing novel nanomaterials for delivering a broad range of therapeutic agents and fabricating multifunctional nanoparticles to target cancer and other diseases. My long-term goal is to facilitate the translation of nanoparticle-based systems from the lab to the clinic using scalable technologies. I am particularly interested in improving the physiochemical properties of poorly water-soluble drugs to enhance their bioavailability through nanotechnology-based formulations.
My current research themes include:
-
Lipid-based nano-systems for targeted drug delivery to skin tissue
-
Nanocrystals for poorly water-soluble drugs
-
Novel topical therapies for skin cancers and inflammatory skin diseases
Postgraduate Project Opportunities
- Safer, scalable, and modifiable polymer-based lipid nanocapsules for drug delivery
- Development of antioxidants-based nanoparticles for topical application
- Development of next-generation nanoparticles loaded hydrogels containing multiple active agents for improved treatment of bacterial infections
- Development of anti-inflammatory-based nanoparticles for topical treatment of psoriasis

The first year of Syria's post-Assad transition confronted educators with a paradox that policy alone cannot resolve: schools can be reopened before the conditions that make teaching meaningful are restored. Infrastructure is visible and measurable; the professional confidence, relational trust, and pedagogical capacity of teachers are not. This paper argues that educational recovery in transitional Syria requires attending as seriously to these invisible conditions as to buildings and curricula — and that practitioner-led initiatives are currently the primary site where this work is happening.
Drawing on programme data from the Abjad Initiative's Iqra Programme (2025–2026) — which reached 1,553 students and 60 educators across four schools in Idlib and Rural Damascus — we examine what an integrated intervention model looks like in practice and what it produces. The programme combined school rehabilitation, structured teacher capacity building across three specialist modules (remedial education, literacy and numeracy, and non-violent classroom management, totalling 40 training hours per school), and Social-Emotional Learning frameworks for students. We use Priestley, Biesta and Robinson's (2015) ecological model of teacher agency as an analytical lens, arguing that capacity building in post-conflict contexts only produces durable change when it simultaneously addresses the material, institutional, and relational conditions within which teachers work — not professional skills in isolation.
Pre- and post-assessment data show significant gains: teacher competencies improved by 72–91% across modules in Idlib, and student academic scores rose from 44.31 to 83 on the Tigla assessment in Rural Damascus — a gain of +38.69 within approximately four months. But the most telling evidence comes from outside the programme itself. A follow-up study tracking former Abjad students after their transition to new schools found that teachers in receiving schools — without being told which students had participated in the programme — consistently identified them as different: more cooperative, more attentive, better able to understand others and express themselves. This transfer of learning dispositions across educational environments suggests that the programme's impact reached beyond measurable skills into something harder to name but easier to recognise: children who had been taught as if their learning and wellbeing mattered.
This paper is situated within a broader research agenda examining teacher agency and recognition in Syria's contested educational landscapes, and reflects on what practitioner-led programme evidence can contribute to that inquiry. It concludes by examining what these findings reveal about the gap between emergency education and genuine educational recovery, and what practitioner-led models can offer Syria's longer-term educational reconstruction at a moment when state-level policy reform remains nascent.

Activity: Oral presentation (Speaker)Transnational Education (TNE) Collaboration Visit: Dr. Yomna Moussa (The British University in Egypt)
As part of the British Council-funded project, "Sustainability in pharmacy teaching and practice: a bridge towards TNE cooperation," Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»'s North Wales Medical School hosted Dr. Yomna Moussa from The British University in Egypt (BUE) to advance collaborative initiatives in pharmacy education and research.
The multi-day visit focused on integrating advanced pedagogical technologies, embedding sustainability into practice, and scoping future structural partnerships between the two institutions:
Digital & Immersive Learning Integration: The team explored the incorporation of digital learning solutions like LearnSci within Bangor's simulated pharmacy ("Fferyllfa") to build contextualized quantitative skills. Additionally, the visit featured an evaluation of a VR aseptic manufacturing simulation—in collaboration with Azize Naji (CEO, Goggleminds) and Chris Goodwin (Senior QC Analyst, Betsi Cadwaladr UHB)—to plan its dual deployment in the BU and BUE curricula.
Sustainable Research Infrastructure: Alongside Dr. Sherif Hamdallah and Prof. Stephen Doughty (Head of NWMS), the delegation toured Bangor's research and teaching facilities, focusing on actionable ways to embed sustainability at the core of joint pharmaceutical science research.
TNE Programme Expansion: Foundational discussions were held with Joanna Edwards (NWMS Director of Teaching and Learning) regarding further curriculum alignment. This serves as an exploratory seed for developing a comprehensive, long-term TNE degree partnership.
Future Grant Strategy: The visit concluded with strategic planning to secure further funding, specifically scoping two additional grant applications to strengthen cross-border cooperation and expand joint sustainability initiatives.
