My name is Evie Mainwaring. I am originally from Pontypridd in South Wales, but relocated at the age of 14 to England. I now live near Y Felinheli and have done for the last 5 years. I am currently working as a Laboratory Scientist at Pennotec. Pennotec is a Biotechnology business based near Pwllheli, Gwynedd, which undertakes sustainable circular economy solutions to mitigate an array of environmental problems.
I have graduated with an Honours degree in Marine Biology and Oceanography and a Master’s degree in Marine Biology from Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³». As to why I’d selected Bangor for marine biology was due to the location of the university, but also the quantity of lab and fieldwork components, allowing me to improve my fieldwork skills. I also appreciated that Bangor offered free access to societies, which enabled me to participate in many dives with Sub Aqua, leading to me achieving my dry suit qualification.
Bangor is surrounded by natural beauty from the mountains to the beaches and is great for studying both marine biology and geographical components of oceanography.
Through hard work and determination, I successfully achieved a First in my Honours degree and a Distinction in my master's. I was very fortunate to be awarded the Athena Swan EDI Scholarship to be able to continue studying at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» for my Masters. Throughout this scholarship I participated in events including one for International Women’s Day, where I shared my personal experiences throughout STEM.
During my Master’s I’ve also had the opportunity for international lab experience in the Philippines. My research focused on identifying the abundance and distribution of microplastics pollution in mangrove sediments. This international experience allowed me to work in different climates not only in the field but also to experience a different culture and working environments.
One of my aspirations is to build on my background in marine biology and my love for diving to contribute to research and conservation efforts directly in the marine environment. While currently working at Pennotec, I’m gaining valuable insights into molecular processes that are equally important in understanding marine life. I am also enjoying the challenges of R&D and researching methods to overcome these challenges. The skills I’m developing in the lab enable me to approach marine biology from a biochemical and ecological perspective, making me more equipped to tackle challenges like preserving coral reefs through understanding chemical implications on marine organisms. My current role at Pennotec has helped me broaden my chemistry skills while still being linked to crustaceans and sustainable marine resources.
My job consists of laboratory data collection and analysis, developing techniques to improve previous methods of analysis of biomaterials and creation of new methods.
Also, developing capabilities in practical chemistry, including chitin and chitosan preparation. Furthermore, preparing internal technical reports for analysis of data collected and supporting the business through marketing communications.
I really like the values that Pennotec focuses on, such as creating sustainable products and processes which benefit health, environment and societal wellbeing. The work here also aligns with my views on sustainable solutions to mitigate environmental implications. The company’s views on the circular economy are important to aid in the innovation of new products, as well as the improvement of other methods and solutions. I would also like to add that the team were very welcoming (no matter how many questions I asked), and the seven months I have been here have been very busy with new projects, which I have enjoyed and had the opportunity to develop new skills and to build upon previous experience.
My plan moving forward is to continue to contribute to the company’s vision while exploring new projects, particularly new projects which will be focused on blue biotechnology.
I am excited about the opportunity to continue working with Pennotec and to work on new innovative solutions that harness marine sources for sustainable applications. This aligns perfectly with my background in marine biology, as it allows me to integrate my knowledge of marine ecosystems and organisms with biotechnology. By continuing with Pennotec, I hope to play a key role in advancing projects and developing sustainable solutions. This internship has been very beneficial for myself, it has allowed me to continue living in North Wales without having to relocate for a career. I would recommend that both students, alumni and employers consider applying for internships through the SIV Scheme. For graduates like myself, it provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and develop practical skills in a professional environment, which is crucial for enhancing career prospects.
For employers, the scheme is also a way to access recent graduate and individuals who are willing to contribute and to learn. Having personally experienced the scheme, I believe there is a benefit to all involved. The scheme also aids in advertisement of local businesses in North Wales, as many graduates are unaware of the opportunities so close to Bangor and relocate. As a result, this scheme creates a positive cycle of economic development and collaboration, benefiting both the business and the region.
A word from Dr Jonathan Hughes, Director of Pennotec Ltd
For starting a position in R&D laboratories like ours, several months of training is usually required to gain an understanding of the science base, scientific techniques and technologies of the business before a significant contribution can be made to the business.
Recruitment, therefore, comes with the risk that the recruit and company will part ways either during or immediately after the period of investment in training. The funded 3-month internship reduces this risk.
Due to Evie’s background knowledge and expertise in Marine Biology and the relevant research and reporting experience Evie gained through her Master’s degree, she was able to make a tangible contribution to our laboratory research activities relatively early in her placement.
Evie is always keen to learn and contribute ideas and insights from the perspective of a marine biologist. Having completed her internship gaining valuable laboratory experience in a Laboratory Assistant role, Evie has recently been promoted to Laboratory Scientist. She has taken opportunities to present our research activities both online and at external workshop events.
In the future, Evie will be expected to take a leading role in the development of the company’s development and marketing of marine-based ingredients, which will further develop her future career opportunities.
